Word Scam on the background of one hundred dollar bills

Have you gotten an inquiry that looks like this:

Hello I am James Tobby and i am hearing impaired i need to know if you can handle website design for a new company and i also need to know if you accept credit cards as form of payment ?

I have been getting these with increasing frequency. The name always changes, but the content in the first message is always the same. First, they make sure you know they are hearing-impaired and then want to know if you accept credit cards.

When I got the first one of these, I responded with my typical questions and then the next email from them looks something like this:

Here is the job details

I have small scale business which i want to turn into large scale business now and the company is based on importing and exporting of Agriculture products such as Kola Nut, Gacillia Nut and Cocoa so i need a best of the best layout design for it. Can you handle that for me ?. so i need you to check out this site but i need something more perfect than this if its possible. the site would only be informational, so i need you to give me an estimate based on the site i gave you to check out, the estimate should include hosting and i want the same page as the site i gave you to check out and i have a private project consultant, he has the text content and the logos for the site.

Note:

1. I want the same number of pages with the example site i gave you to check excluding videos and blogs.

2. I want only English language

3. I don’t have a domain yet but i want the domain name as rootsnherbs.com

4. you will be updating the site for me.

5. i will be providing the images, logos and content for the site.

6. i want the site up and running before ending of next month.

7. My budget is $4000 to $8000

Kindly get back to me with an estimate asap

This almost seems legit, right. There’s information on what they want, a budget, etc. But not so fast. If you continue to do exchanges with this person, and even go so far as to send a proposal, they will request something odd. Wouldn’t you know that their “project consultant” doesn’t take credit cards? And since you do, they’d like you to charge the full amount to the credit card, then send a payment to their project manager.

Now it’s starting to sound fishy.

There are a lot of people who may not have heard about it, and may think that a great website project just fell into their lap. The reason they claim to be hearing-impaired is so they don’t have to talk to you on the phone, because either they are not good enough actors or else they have thick accents they don’t want you to hear.

What happens if you agree? Well, you charge the card. It goes through, no problem. You send the payment and they cash it. Then you never hear from them again. Who you DO hear from is the credit card company about the fraudulent charge.

And if you take credit cards but haven’t experienced this, if someone calls their credit card company and claims your charge is fraudulent, they take the money right out of your bank account, with very little notice, I might add.

And if you actually sent a check to that person, not only do you lose the original deposit, but you lose the money you sent to their “project consultant” as well.

That’s when you are really in trouble.

I keep getting these messages, almost weekly now, and I can only assume that it’s working and that’s why they keep sending them. This is my warning. Never agree to send money to another contractor on your client’s behalf. This will never end well.

And to these scammers, please STOP.

I’ve referred to this guy Mark Wade through another client I think on the exact same day, June 18th, 2019. We’ve been communicating via email and text. He sent me the exact same info. Something has been off since he never responded to direct questions about project specifics which I raised. He wanted to send me a down payment today and said he is in Maryland for medical purposes so could not send a check, only credit card. I suggested PayPal and he refused saying “my credit card company doesn’t remit it for payments due to some issues with my bank”. I’m really glad I found this thread, going to stop all communication with him right away. Is there any way to report these scammers to authorities?

      • Lior on July 17, 2019 at 2:14 pm

oh, he also used a different phone number when contacting me – 508-928-7804

    • Tina Wagner on July 23, 2019 at 10:08 am

Just received this same one for an 80-page Veehaus Catalog, language is similar. I first received a text and then stupidly gave them my email. Then the email asked me for my cell. That was what did not seem right. The the infor came across similar website not registered, Fabricator and same company name.

        • HG on August 6, 2019 at 2:02 pm

SAME – I got the exact request from Alex Wenzel at that contact info yesterday. He’s signed a proposal and sent as I was reading this thread, I wish there was a way to get him in actual trouble for this!

          • Scott Forester on August 20, 2019 at 10:10 pm

SAME – Basically, the same story with the same business name.

  10. SMM on June 5, 2019 at 1:43 pm

Got a text from this same guy. I asked for more info about his project. Received two follow up emails. See copy of first one below… Although the “ALL CAPS” was peculiar, I wasn’t immediately suspicious, until I tried to do some research on him and his company and found out about the SCAMS! I am so glad I delayed, primarily because I asked to meet via video conference call and he never responded to the timeslots that I provided…just sent additional info. I know now, that getting someone on video and/or in person will be my criteria.

      • amymasson on May 9, 2019 at 9:30 am

They are hoping to “hire” you, have you charge their card and send them a check for the difference. They cash the check. Card gets reported stolen, and the bank takes their money back. You are out the cost for the charge AND the extra you sent back. They walk away with the difference.

I just received one from a Michael Hope. In a hospital receiving deaf disability treatments. My sister is deaf. She gets no required treatments for her condition. First flag. Secondly the speech was broken but I still asked what I could help with. He responded with a catalog and logo treatment. Second and Third flags considering I’ve seen this scam in various formats since 2014. His next response was angry when I told him I was 2 months out on my turn around and also I suspected this was scam. So yeah. Be on the lookout for a Michael Hope – email: Offiice23@gmail.com. Last transmission from him was this morning (4/18/19)

  15. D on April 17, 2019 at 6:49 pm

Holy shit. This just happened to me. He just contacted me yesterday and red flags went up when he said he couldn’t take PayPal or Venmo. I work in-house and rarely take freelance work, so I was just curious and told him that I’d collect payment after all was done as to not get locked up quickly. I sent him a Quickbooks Invoice and he waiting until the next day to say “I got in touch with the consultant but I’m having few issues with him concerning our contract agreement.” To which I thought, uh what, who is this consultant and why do I care. His strange use of language in text was a clue that he’s not a native English speaker, but is pretending to do.

Whenever I didn’t respond, he’d respond asking why. He told me he has lung cancer and was having financially problems due to the treatments. My father had lung cancer and I thought, Should you be even trying to start a business that needs design work if you’re in that condition… so yeah sketchy as fuck. Poor guy who’s actually named Scott Simmerok.

  16. James on April 11, 2019 at 2:35 pm

Please report your interactions to Trenton Sheriffs office (609) 989-6111 or directly with the prosecutor. I just got off the phone and it seems like it was the first time they have heard about it. I’ve provided my info and the phone number he used to text and I feel if enough provide the same info and are in contact directly with their office it will shed a light on how bad it is and put pressure to find and stop his actions, please also reference Scott Simmerok or any other alias because I am sure this is all the same guy.. Please report this.

    • Amy Masson on April 11, 2019 at 2:39 pm

This is a widespread scam, lots of people attempting it. I don’t think it’s all one guy just because I don’t think one person would have time to communicate with this many people at once.

  17. James on April 11, 2019 at 1:57 pm

Thank you for sharing, I had the same contact today 4/11/2019 with Scott Simmerok. He texted me to say he was interested in design services and being vigilant I always google names to see the profile of the person requesting work. I appreciate this post and shedding light. His number was (609) 469-4664 and its the same New Jersey based scammer. Its a shame because there is actually a guy with his real name and he is a pastor, I could only imagine how that must be. This guy is the lowest level human on earth, I am glad this post put his actions to light and hopefully he gets arrested.

  18. nicole on April 8, 2019 at 12:35 pm

Thank you for this post!!!!! I received a random text asking me if I offer design services? I asked who he was & how he received my info? “Paul’s” response was that he came across my profile on Creative Hotlist … hummm … interesting since I haven’t updated my credentials on that site in over 7 years!!??!! Another “flag” was he asked for my email but if he received my info like he claimed than he should have my email correct? I did give it too him since I have changed my email within the years. I can’t thank you’all enough for this post it saved me from this scam and so I want to share mine so everyone can be aware! Here’s what he sent just like all the other posts …

Wish I had been as skeptical as my wife who immediately performed a more extensive google search than my own on this guy and found this chain. I wasted hours dealing with him and reading his company prospectus. I’m glad I didn’t spend any time or effort designing the logo.

Same story. Scott Simmerok. Great Elms furniture company (657) 206-4892 simmerokscott@gmail.com He said he can only use QuickBooks, so I needed to set up a QuickBooks account (that he would pay for) and then invoice him for $1,000 before I get started on the project. I did that before my wife prevented this from going any further. I’m not sure how the scam goes. I invoiced him but closed the QuickBooks account before he had a chance to pay it.

I can’t believe he has been using the exact same fake company name and alias for all these years. We never would have found this page if he changed the name of his supposed company and the name he goes by and phone number from time to time.

    —————————–

    Hello,

It was a pleasure getting a reply from you, as per our discussion earlier i will be providing the video, images, logos, content for the site, it’s a small scale business which i want to turn into large scale business, located in Teddington, United Kingdom and it’s based on importing and exporting of Agriculture products such as Kola Nut, Gacillia Nut and Cocoa so i need a best of the best layout design for it in handling my website design meanwhile you don’t have worry about my budget and am presently admitted at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea, London SW3 6JJ, UK was admitted during the weekend for an emergency skin cancer surgery but i want you to understand that i want the site up and running by mid October 2018 and the domain name as Spearsfarm.com if you can handle that and would only need Facebook and Twitter as the only social media platform. i’ll be responsible for the extra charges and you will also be updating the site for me, once in 2-3 months, you can sum up the total amount and i am willing to make a 50% down payment once you are ready so work can commence as soon as possible and would like to know if you accept credit cards for payment cause that’s the easiest and secured way for me to make payments while am here undergoing my treatment.

    Best Regards
    Long
