I have been getting these with increasing frequency. The name always changes, but the content in the first message is always the same. First, they make sure you know they are hearing-impaired and then want to know if you accept credit cards.
When I got the first one of these, I responded with my typical questions and then the next email from them looks something like this:

I have small scale business which i want to turn into large scale business now and the company is based on importing and exporting of Agriculture products such as Kola Nut, Gacillia Nut and Cocoa so i need a best of the best layout design for it. Can you handle that for me ?. so i need you to check out this site but i need something more perfect than this if its possible. the site would only be informational, so i need you to give me an estimate based on the site i gave you to check out, the estimate should include hosting and i want the same page as the site i gave you to check out and i have a private project consultant, he has the text content and the logos for the site.
Note:
1. I want the same number of pages with the example site i gave you to check excluding videos and blogs.
2. I want only English language
3. I don’t have a domain yet but i want the domain name as rootsnherbs.com
4. you will be updating the site for me.
5. i will be providing the images, logos and content for the site.
6. i want the site up and running before ending of next month.
7. My budget is $4000 to $8000

This almost seems legit, right. There’s information on what they want, a budget, etc. But not so fast. If you continue to do exchanges with this person, and even go so far as to send a proposal, they will request something odd. Wouldn’t you know that their “project consultant” doesn’t take credit cards? And since you do, they’d like you to charge the full amount to the credit card, then send a payment to their project manager.
Now it’s starting to sound fishy.
There are a lot of people who may not have heard about it, and may think that a great website project just fell into their lap. The reason they claim to be hearing-impaired is so they don’t have to talk to you on the phone, because either they are not good enough actors or else they have thick accents they don’t want you to hear.
What happens if you agree? Well, you charge the card. It goes through, no problem. You send the payment and they cash it. Then you never hear from them again. Who you DO hear from is the credit card company about the fraudulent charge.
And if you take credit cards but haven’t experienced this, if someone calls their credit card company and claims your charge is fraudulent, they take the money right out of your bank account, with very little notice, I might add.
And if you actually sent a check to that person, not only do you lose the original deposit, but you lose the money you sent to their “project consultant” as well.
That’s when you are really in trouble.
I keep getting these messages, almost weekly now, and I can only assume that it’s working and that’s why they keep sending them. This is my warning. Never agree to send money to another contractor on your client’s behalf. This will never end well.
And to these scammers, please STOP.

Who ARE these people? So frustrating to think people actually spend their time scamming or phishing or whatever. ââïž I am a busy graphic designer and enjoy my work. The first time I fell for it. Asking many questions and providing an estimate. Then I figured I better do some checking and googling. I donât understand the mentality of these people and I guess I never will. Claims to be William Bitunjac by name and wants an event planner because he is a sailor delivering cargo and too busy to plan his mum and dad’s 50th surprise wedding anniversary party. 150 guests… Needs tons of things and then the hook… Will give $5,000 deposit to us and wants us to pay the live band that he already booked $15,000 cash (because the live band does not have a credit card reader). Shame on these scam artists. I hope no one falls for this one.
Did you happen to capture any contact information or contact the police. I am the REAL William Bitunjac and I’ve been trying to catch this guy for months as he’s been posing as me trying to scam people. He’s created a fake drivers license from Wisconsin where I used to live as well.

I began receiving messages from Julio Gonzales yesterday asking me if I accept credit card payments and was insistent that I go through Quickbooks Merchant Plus for my transactions with him. He wanted the account set up before he even told me what he wanted me to do for him. When I politely asked for information on the services he was looking for, he emailed me the exact same thing you just posted with Diamodus and the furniture. Thank you for helping me confirm that the feeling I was having was valid.
I was contacted by this Julio Gonzales as well this morning and I was immediately skeptical. Identical Diamodus furniture approach and poor grammar. Thank you for confirming my suspicions!

This crap is still going on people. Got the call and text on my phone, and requests to set up cc merchant accounts but not specific ones (no paypal, no square etc… He used the names Mark Ashley, but his email said Mark Edwards. A FISHER FURNITURE, dealing in exports and imports…. Thanks to all of you for sharing, you saved me!
I have received 2 of these this year. The annoying thing is that at first you waste valuable time by giving the benefit of doubt as it might be genuine (it’s clearly a real person responding) – then as time moves on the ‘job’ becomes more fishy and you realise you’ve wasted valuable time on these lowlifes. The best thing to do is to ignore the emails. But then, as a business, you still think you might risk upsetting a genuine customer. Other options are to maybe point out early that you only accept PayPal and only provide work for clients in your own country – you probably won’t hear from them again.

I am so glad I found your article. Thanks for posting this! I am deaf. I’ve been freelance graphic designer for 6 years. It has never happened to me until now. After having the first few dialogues with the scammers at the same time (yes, I have two emails with two different names and what they requested are the exact same information,) that is when I found it fishy and realized it was scammers. I immediately googled it up and I came across to your article. My instinct were right and I am so glad that I didn’t get into this scam. Now I am aware that there’s actually scammer that want to target designers and developers. I’m going to warn all my artist friends and family.

Yes, they reached out first by text, same person or e-mail. I stopped when couldn’t reach a person by phone live. It’s sad they feel they have to do this to people.

This is exactly what I received. I have had this happen to me before and whenever there is an email that has numerous digits after the name, count it as suspect. His address was patrickhitchcock1537@gmail.com. The company name was a little different named VEQTIS, but after a Google search I found his “inspiration” word for word on a website for purchasing domain names.

Same thing from “Julio Gonzalez” (DIAMODUS) He first contacted me on Google My Business / Google maps.
I’ve also recently gotten similar scams from Rojas Avery, Arellano Lee, Travis Alviar, Steven Dildy,
Jeremy Carl , William Bitunjac , Toby Laurie, Stanley Dominic , and

Different company names, but all the same scam.
It’s absurd and such a waste of time. Sure would be nice if we could figure out a way to flip the table and scam them!

I got the same exact email from “Paul Shemeley” about “Veqtis”, word from word. His email was “iampaulshemeley@gmail.com” so it didn’t strike me as suspicious until he said he couldn’t do payments through PayPal or Venmo due to his credit card. I came across this page just by searching for Veqtis.

I received a text asking if I do website design, though he did not state anything about being hearing impaired. I set up an appointment to speak in an hour. He did not tell me the name of his company, but he then sent me — his biggest mistake — the exact paragraph you stated in this article. I wanted to be prepared before we spoke, so I Googled “agriculture kola nut california ben chris” and immediately came up with your article. Thank you for your article. I’ve been going back and forth on a proposed catalog and logo project with the “Willson Berry” guy, too. He has not yet asked for any sort of charge or payment, but it all seemed odd, so I Googled his email address and this story – complete with his email address – popped up.
Thanks so much for the warning! I have now blocked his email address. I was the victim of a Craigslist scam many, many years ago and I still feel foolish. Glad there are more resources to shut these people down now before it gets too far.
I get these all the time. Im glad to see columns like this on the web that exposes these people and I encourage anyone who gets one of these emails or text messages to post it on forums or comment on columns like this, where a simple google searche can find the scamer and help us all as designers to not waste our time.
