Maybe.
But first, consider this. You are the expert at your business. You know what you bring to the table. You know who benefits from your service. You know how you best serve your customers. Can you present this information to the reader of your website?
Start by Brainstorming
Make a list of all the pages on your site, then under each page, write a list of the main things you think people should know on that page. It might look something like this:
Of course, this is incredibly rudimentary, but it gives you the idea. Just put the ideas in a list before trying to write the content.
Next, ask yourself this question: “Why should someone hire me versus my competition?“
This is an important question. If you can’t answer it, then maybe you need to figure out why. If you can, then that’s the information you need to include on your homepage. Start with a list of three reasons, then convert that list into a single paragraph.
Rough Draft
Don’t worry about how it sounds, just use your list and get the main points down. Then read it and think about it.
This is the point when you should decide if you can finish, or if it’s best to bring in an expert. I really like clients to start on writing the content on their own so they can think best about what they bring to the table, how they can help their clients, and how best to get that message across.
For working with a copywriter
Copywriters are great at stringing words and sentences together, but they may not know anything about your business, so expect to educate them. Plan to spend some time talking to the writer to tell them about your business and why it’s great. If you can sell the writer on your services, then he or she can likely put together the right phrases to sell your business to website visitors.
Often times a copywriter can take what you’ve tried to write and improve upon it so be sure to share your brainstorming list and your rough draft.
Did you try all the above and came up empty?
A good copywriter can do research to learn about your business and write the content from scratch. Keep in mind that this will be more costly than if they start with your rough draft.
How much does a copywriter cost?
Great question! It varies and depends a lot on how much research they need to do, how much experience they have, and how much content they need to write. Plan for $100 per page, but it could go more or less depending on how much content goes on each page and how much research is involved.
